When a band of predators came to believe eccentric widow Marjorie Jackson was a modern-day witch, it became the seed for the theft of $3,800,000, more than the famous Brinks robbery. Did the Jackson family grocery-chain fortune carry a curse? Over four decades the money contributed to the mental illness of the heir and his wife, lured 24 people into crime, brought about two murders, and led two men to the electric chair.

scavengers a true story of money madness and murder eBook Dick Cady

I lived this event with my family. I am a grandchild of the half-sister that inherited her estate. I remember the day it happened and I went to the house to be with my family. It was such a tragic event. I remember so many of the details that were in the house and surrounding the case. I am so grateful for this book because it delves into the background of all of the criminals. It takes all of the news articles that I have read over the years and heard my family talk about and puts it into a timeline with real people and real events. It also talks about some of my families history that I was not aware of.

This book is suspenseful, well written and from what I can remember very accurate. The only perspective this book does not have is from my family. They have never spoken publicly about my great-aunt. When the book ended I was so sad for Marjorie because people just helped themselves to her fortune and lived as if it was theirs to do. So many people took advantage of her. No amount of eccentricity warrants that kind of treatment. She just wanted to be left alone and since she had money people believed she did not deserve that. May she finally rest in peace.

scavengers a true story of money madness and murder eBook Dick Cady Reviews

My husband recommend the book after seeing Mr. Cady's interview with Mike Ahern. I bought the kindle edition and once I started reading the book it was hard for me to put it down. Very enjoyable! I must read for any hoosier or any murder mystery fan. Good Job Mr. Cady! Loved it!
Great
Fascinating account of a curious Indy family. I grew up on indy's north side and didn't know about this drama that unfolded before my eyes. Well-written and well researched.
I ordered this book for my fathers day gift, because he was actually familiar with the story and he knew some of the people mentioned in the book. It was great, because it was delivered in time for me to give it to him as a gift.
poorly written. lost track of the characters several times. the author repeated sentences/narrative within a paragraph of each other.
Former Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Dick Cady recounts a bizarre and byzantine tale of murder and madness in this highly readable and enjoyable crime story that reads like pulp fiction.Except that it was "ripped from the headlines" of Cady's old ink-stained stomping grounds, The Indianapolis Star. A great read for the beach or poolside this summer!
This story seems incredible on many levels - but it is a detailed account of an actual series of crimes against a wealthy, but mentally ill, older widow. Her beliefs, her lifestyle, and the crimes committed against her over time make for a page-turning read. Mr. Cady has done a thorough job of revealing the many small facts that come together to yield an intricate pattern. Those who enjoy accounts of true crime should not miss "Scavengers."
